The Day Lasts More than a Hundred Years by Chingiz Aitmatov. I will shill this book till I die. It's a historical fiction novel about a railroad village in Soviet Central Asia, told with a non-linear storyline and a scifi subplot (people label the entire book as scifi but it's simply not true). I can't think of a book with better themes of tradition vs. modernity than this one.
