/lit/ - Literature

I like him - I think he writes nicely middlebrow, entertaining books that provoke thought and reaction. He's got an efficient style, and he has intriguing plots. He's no stellar writer - his prose style is fairly transparent and self-effacing, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

I've honestly never understood all the hate he gets on /lit/ while the whole board collectively wanks off to Infinite Jest, which I thought was fucking horrible, and DFW in general is unreadable. Consider the Lobster is one of the worst essay collections I've read in years, while Chucky P's Non-Fiction was genuinely good.

What's the best country to study philosophy?

Because I'm thining on asking for scolarships in the Italian embassy.

A prison shit built on the back of a giant tortoise. the tortoise is all that remains of the 4 leviathans god placed at the 4 corners of the earth upon its creation. Only the most ruthless criminals and warriors are sent there to rot. But on day a preacher is sent to the prison for causing trouble and teaching subversive concepts to the people of a small fishing town. Upon arriving in the prison city he begins to receive telepathic communications from the tortoise its self. It longs to be free of its human bonds and torture. The pastor vows to do all he can.

5 weeks later a city wide riot breaks out. the pastor has carefully orchestrated everything to go as planned so he can make it to the control center in the center of the leviathan. he fights his way through the city over a matter of days and finally reaches the control tower only to be mortally wounded by a guard. the guard is killed by a fellow inmate however, and the pastor seizes the controls and sets the heading for due east.

a week later all on board the leviathan are dead, but the controls hold fast. the tortoise plunges over the edge of the world in to a black hole and it forever freed from its mortal bonds.

Can you explain to me what the literary value of Pride & Prejudice is? It seemed more like a soap opera than a piece of literature to me.
