my problem with hemingway is that paradoxically, that "straightforwardness" and the iceberg hidden beneath becomes a look at me bullshit and too in your face. i remember even the killers (which is the best ive read of him) being too repetitive and in your face about the fatalism of the protagonist. and something like the sun also rises is waaaay too repetitive, dull and artistically lame imo. im not denying his impact, but i would much prefer carver, hempel, palahniuk, salinger or lish from his pool of influence, usually for their creativity alone. the latter two especially since salinger always has something mystical, beautiful, bittersweet, funny to contrast the bleak with and lish is litteraly insane. theyre all more playful compared to hemingway you know and i guess i like that the most

glad you asked. the creators said they were inspired by gordon lish, the all time master of
>Loosened association
>Antic behavior
>Autism
>Morbid ambivalence

check out zimzum, mourner at the door or his latest white plains

>If there's a great American, he will be hidden for awhile
And its a 100% Bloom's fault because the fat autist read him and gave him nice blurbs but didnt mention him in the list. Maybe he knew the masses couldn't handle it. Shoo masses shoo! And shoo you too Bloom, shoo you too!

>Is one of your favorite author alive?
yes
>Have you tried to meet him/her IRL?
ive tried phoning him. a friend told me that his phone number was supposed to be in his latest book so im waiting for that to come in the mail. but the US wont be cheap to call
>What would you tell or ask?
id ask him about the time sallinger called him on the phone when he was in the asylum. or the time he pissed off nabakov by editing him. or his favorite words. or if he believes in the principle of sufficient reason. or where i should be sending my written tributes. i imagine it would be hard to keep him talking

i was just reading lost horizon. rip van winkle feels like the OP pic. anyways lemme shill my lish

>zimzum by gordon lish
its semi autobiographical but its an autistic insane man rambling in a different style about something different each chapter. there is something almost divine but also very stupid about it.
>peru by gordon lish
a similarly autistic insane man recounts his memory of murdering a kid when he was six. very hypnotic and mystifying

gordon lish. he is known around here as "that guy who edited raymond carver" but if you look at his edits, its clear that he is responsible for carver's whole style. his own writing has gone unnoticed because for the most part, its unreadably autistic and niche, but i believe he struck some vein in achieving a very different effect with syntax that you cant go back from. sometimes its very annoying too

read any sentence from any of lish's works and its pure autism. i find him masterful but others find him annoying. the truth is, he is masterfully annoying.

Okay, I've been shilling this man for months now. I've been shilling him on Carver threads. I've been shilling him on prose threads. I've been shilling the living shit out of him on wierd, obscurantist, insane literature threads. Have any of you read him? Can someone please come around to reading him? Will this man go into the unknown having never not been unread? I blame Bloom. I think Bloom is to blame. I think this, and this really is a thing I think, I think, of all the people the blame may fall upon, it falls upon the most on this man who goes by "Harold", who might also be known to go around going by "Bloom", of whom, this much can be said: He is to blame.

If you enjoyed that, please read Gordon Lish
