What is it called when a character (or even the narrator) in a novel, TV show, movie, etc acknowledges flaws in the writing? Like a character saying that something makes no sense or a plan is full of holes, etc. I'm sure I've read something about it having some sort of proper name, like a way for the author to deflect criticism by saying "yeah I know there's a plothole, or that this is bad writing, look how the book acknowledges it"

It is impossible to not be a pragmatist. All beliefs serve purposes of the believer; they satisfy psychological needs such as certainty consistency. Sometimes people do come to accept beliefs that make them uncomfortable, but the guilt of reverting is even greater than the uncomfortableness.
