What do you think the 'Zone' stood for?

Other than the obvious ambiguity of conflicting territorial acquisition transitions?

Was it given spiritual value? Some place where the 'Tower' couldn't protect others? Where human life was free, society was mixed to do what it wanted? Where Germany was in the final phase of its rocket? The descent of Germany. The ascent of something else, antithetical perhaps. And what was the 'counterforce'? Magic? Gravity?

So do the synthetic materials' long molecular chains represent cognitive dissonance the same way a long justification for one's behavior does for unjustifiable actions?

As time stretches out do history and the amount of dead matter (coal, oil) to utilize for human progress increase?

Was the Freudian psychologist correct? Was Slothrop manipulating the rocket with his sexual desires?

Oh god what the fuck.

I just started reading this. I've gotten to the part where Slothrop is inside a toilet getting shit all over him.

My friend recommended this book, and this was his exact words: "It's an epic mystery quest for a rocket set against the backdrop of WWII"

I was expecting Hemingway mixed with Chandler for bloody sake.

Should I keep going or what???

To distill it down to one sentence. What is the message of this book?

How does Gravity's Rainbow re-define the novel?
According to wiki this is so, yet how, where?

So is Pynchon telling us that humans can only allow themselves to experience happiness in the absence of control?

Why is it that Roger and Jessica can only share their pure young love under the uncertainty of the future's existence?
Why the high ranking military officer (forgot his name) enjoys being dominated by Katje?
Why Enzian becomes a caricature of man as he is controlled by the rocket?
How Slothrop eventually gives in to madness and exits stage left after a life lived as an experiment?

Where does the difficulty lie exactly in Gravity's Rainbow? I was thinking about reading it but I haven't got around to do so, and all the folks here treat it like some kind of literary endboss and I wonder why.
