Not a native english speaker too.
I remember that in highschool almost none of classmates would read, so most of them would just read summaries and few would listen to audiobooks or actually read the book. With Shakespeare, we had to read "Romeo and Juliet", which at first made all the girls go like "aww how lovely" and most of us the boys were poking fun of it, but after reading everybody seemed to hate it aside of me lol. Later we would have to read "The merchant of Venice", and by that point almost everybody hated Shakespeare.
I even remember when we read the Illiad or the Oddyssey and everybody told it was boring and incomprehensible, while I was all autistic and excited because it was the fucking greeks.
