nobody cared about his worldbuilding they cared about a fantasy story about overcoming terrible odds with the help of your friends, a story they'd call subversive if it came out today actually, "whoah all the cool rugged heroes failed and the little guy from the countryside made it almost all the way and he failed too and then the wicked goblin saved the world? and then they go home and have to save it too!"

You can't claim he's got masturbatory worldbuilding and then complain that it doesn't feel real and lived in. It doesn't have much worldbuilding at all. Tolkien doesn't care about Aragorn's tax policy, he cares about epic poetry. Conan feeling real and lived in, along with Howard's boxing and pirate and cowboy stories, isn't about autistic maps and graphs it's the way he writes.
