When shit's classic there's obviously something to it for a lot of other people. This increases the possibility that you may find there's something to it too, because people are in a lot of ways alike.

Modern literature hasn't been filtered yet. You have a larger chance to run into utter garbage.

This is assuming that you have somewhat common tastes, of course. Apart from that it has no value, since what makes something a classic is merely a collective positive judgement of a certain work.
