The ESV is a great modern translation. I prefer it to the NRSV.

What did you guys think of this book?

I liked the overall theme, with the God character playing a large role over a bunch of shorter stories. Pretty strong character too, all-powerful but still relate-able, almost like the author intended him to be a reflection of man, while the text says that man is a reflection of him. So much filler though, especially the genealogy and the laws, couldn't that shit go in an appendix?

The New Testament I could have done without, I know it wasn't actually included in the first edition of the text, but why even bother putting it in? The same story told four times in different styles with different details? What the fuck. And then it just turns into a bunch of philosophy about the protagonist. The ending was alright though, kind of trying too hard to be weird and deep, but an enjoyable read. Maybe because God returned, he makes for much better stories than Jesus. Yeah, I know the whole Jesus and God are the same person thing (it only says it fifty thousand fucking times), but couldn't they have made the two characters at least tie in better? The authors of the New Testament took lots of Old Testament prophecies and shit to try and connect them, but it doesn't even make sense when you consider it in context most of the time.

Overall 7/10 - Some really groundbreaking themes and narrative style but it's hard to ignore the flaws. It gets a slight pass due to the fact that it was a collaboration from many authors and we can't expect all of them to be good I guess.
