The modern pop-sci (often 'pop' isn't a necessary qualifier as many scientists share this opinion too) conception of philosophy as an unnecessary and outdated handmaiden of science is an artefact of post-history. 'Science' has displaced all other modes of enquiry and forms the basis of the worldview of the West and therefore the illusory global monoculture, and is therefore taken for granted without the historical appreciation for its development out of natural philosophy as a distinct entity with its own programme of understanding. Its rigorous demands for evidence and the pseudo-'democratic' structure of Science as Community are taken purely for granted as mere 'common sense' by people without the true desire to understand their own beliefs outside of whether these beliefs are 'valid' or not.

'Philosophy' is therefore understood as only sophistry, existing outside the strictures of 'the scientific method' as if there was ever a single formulation of this concept in its mature form. The history of Decartes, Locke, Hume, Kant as providing validity to developments in natural philosophy/science is simply not understood and treated as a parallel, vestigial development of human enquiry which produces no 'testable results' and therefore does not 'count' as 'true' or 'real'.

It is a shame. As someone with a genuine love of science I think the small-minded dismissal of 'philosophy' or even other modes of enquiry misunderstands the goals and diminishes the history of the human search for knowledge.
