I don't know if it's what you are looking for, but maybe Preston & Child? I feel like if you like Crichton you'll like their books. And they usually do a good job with really obnoxious secondary antagonist characters, like the asshole cop/FBI agent/scientist who is standing in the protagonists' way.

What does lit think of Preston & Child? Relic is pretty good, but they really hit their stride with Reliquary and then Cabinet of Curiosities
