I went on a Raymond Chandler tear starting in the summer. I loved all of them but these I remember the most.
>The Big Sleep
>Lady in the Lake
>Farewell, My Lovely
He got me inspired enough to try my own hand at detective fiction and now I'm working on a detective novel. It's given me a hitherto unexpected appreciation for mystery writing, because that shit is seriously hard.
What I like about Chandler is how he builds webs of characters that when charted out are just as tangled as when you tried to read into them. I don't know if he ever plotted or just ran with the ball, but I like the way his work feels like it has no holes. I keep thinking I have "the formula" figured out, and then I come back to Chandler knee bent asking to be taught again. It helps that his novels and his short stories are all fun to read.

I also liked
>Hurricane Season
Which I got as a Christmas gift last year. It's a foul book but I liked it, especially in review of its main character The Witch, who got seriously fucked over multiple times in her life.

What is the best titling convention for a novel? Is there any consistent formula or pattern to what makes something sell well, or a prominent part of the literary canon?

There are a lot of 2 word titles, often Adjective-Noun constructions, for example:

Infinite Jest
American Psycho
Blood Meridian
White Noise
Pale Fire
Dead Souls

There are of course a lot of "The X"

There are the mononyms:

Lolita
Siddhartha
Stoner
Ulysses

Obviously there are all sorts of other kinds, lots of long ass book titles. But just curious in people's thoughts here. What makes a title the most iconic? What catches one's attention?
