Anbody ever read John Henry Newman's poetry? I've read a few of his short poems, they're really good. I want to get around to reading "The Dream of Gerontius" sooner or later.

There's not a single saint who isn't extremely cool and based in his or her own way.

Speaking of, it's Saint John Henry Newman's feast day. He's a personal favorite of mine.

>"I have read him a great deal... [in 'Oxen'] where all the other authors are
parodied, Newman alone is rendered pure, in the grave beauty of his style. Besides, I needed that fulcrum to hold up the rest... The Church will surely decide to make a saint of him, if only for the numerous conversions that have followed in the wake of his own. At least a Blessed, if they don't succeed in finding a miracle."

Huh, Joyce predicted Newman's sainthood.

The Church has never changed its doctrines and never will. Quod semper, quod ubique, quod ab omnibus. Truth is clarified and brought to its full flower over the centuries (we would not say that an oak tree is different in essence from its acorn, though they may appear so to an observer), but the Gospel has never been altered.

Who else has been reading Newman since his canonization? I've been reading his sermons delivered before Oxford. They're from back when he was still an Anglican, but they're still so wonderful and insightful, and of course, the prose is great. Joyce was right to praise Newman's prose.

You misunderstand. The good interpretation of Aquinos' cosmological arguments is that; EVEN IF you accept causality, god is present. If you don't his presence is obvious – obviously.

>Fifteen Sermons Preached Before The University of Oxford Between A.D. 1826 And 1843, by John Henry Newman

Now that Newman is a saint I feel compelled to go back and read more of his stuff. These sermons were written back when he was still an Anglican, but they contain a lot of great thought in them, so they're definitely worth checking out.

Today is John Henry Newman's feast day. Has /lit/ ever read anything by him? He was a fairly prolific writer, and also a poet as well. Joyce considered his prose to be the finest in the English language.

This is also covered by the Church's great writers. Read John Henry Newman on the development of doctrine. Newman's going to be a saint soon, by the way, so his work should receive particular attention.
