Need some help finding a Sci-Fi book I can't remember the name and would like to read again.

It starts off with a committee/government wanting to make a memorial project, or some kind of art project to send out into space. There is then a team or group that ends up on planet/asteroid thing. They explore it and start to improve it. A grey cube is found, it's some kind of computer/block of nano machines. They find out they are in a giant compartment of a much larger ship. The larger ship has many other compartments with different alien races. They find a way to "escape" the giant ship with some of the people, the rest stay there.

That is most of what I remember, any help finding the name of the story and/or author would be appreciated. Thank you.

For anyone interested Hall's Secret Teachings has been reprinted a couple of times in theese cheap paperback editions. Readers, Dovers and the like, are desu quite poor. The color illustrations are smooshed together so they can fit. Some of them actually leave out certain illustrations all together. Original typeset is gone too. They cost a bit more but the actual Philosophical Research Society (PRS) editions are well worth it.
