I think there’s something in this, ESLposter. Pepe has been so persistent in meme culture that it’s hard not to see him as some kind of symbol from the collective unconscious. At the end of the film “Feels Good Man” (which I’m ashamed to say I’ve watched in full) a Reddit-y looking “memeologist” suggests something like this without speculating precisely what he might symbolise. But your guess of the “meme itself” is at least a nice meta explanation.

If I'm religious, please don't recommend any secular materialist stuff, and DEFINITELY no eastern thought : it's forbidden by our Church, sinful, not the true way of God. Why? Just because that's my opinion of course! If I'm a materialist, please, keep that stuff about values and religion far away from me please. What a joke. After all, when I read I'm looking for ammunition that I can use in arguments, not real knowledge that will benefit myself or those around me. I don't want to think about the meaning of life and death at all, thank you very much! If I'm a buddhist, please, do not point out that the Buddha rejected everything about my lifestyle and in fact recommended a hardcore lifestyle of ascetic celibacy living in the forest to overcome any identification with pleasure and pain. Please, samsara is nirvana. What I really want is a treatise about how I actually don't have to do anything, or face any doubt or discomfort. If I'm a pessimist, just give me more rage fuel. More about how the world outside of my room is a shitty and scary place, please!! I'm insistent on being the least pleasant person in my social group. I don't want to hear another word of the beautiful side of life and nature. I definitely don't want to hear from anyone who wasn't miserable all the time, like me. After all it's because I'm smarter than them that I'm miserable.
