The fact that you can't even for a second imagine what the world-view of the ancient world is, and it isn't even the ancient world, even up to today. It's human nature, it's just more exemplified in the past because it was not only simpler in terms of life(everything from technology to societal behavior) but harder, and premature death was normal. Kill or be killed, conquer or get conquered.

Empedocles, Plato and Thales of Miletus go into a bar. The bartender asks what they want and Empedocles says
"I'd like a beer, but it MUST be really cold."
He gets a really cold beer. Plato is next.
"I'd like a beer, but WITHOUT any foam."
The bartender struggles a little but in the end Plato gets a beer without any foam. The bartender loos at Thales and asks him: "What about you?" And Thales goes

I want to write a genre fiction novel that presents Imperialism, colonization and the idea of cultural superiority in a positive light. What are some texts I should read/study for this endeavor?

By the way I'm not doing this because I necessarily agree with it, but I like the idea of writing a story with a sort of Devil's Advocate bias to it.

I had a chuckle when about a month after reading it, I opened my omnibus of Montaigne's "Essays" at random to find "On that Armour of the Parthians". Fun times.

To my shame, I haven't yet read Montaigne's "Defence of Plutarch and Seneca"...
Guess I know what I'm doing tonight.
