Oh the sentiment is fine, but it leaves a few things out. Humanity's nature is innately sinful and we do not have the power to actually be paradigms of virtue ourselves. This is why we seek God's mercy, and salvation, and repent for our sins while attempting to do the best we can.

But he could be forgiven for his failures. All that is necessary is that one acknowledges that we are only mortal, and that through the grace of God, our sins may be forgiven.
