Oh the sentiment is fine, but it leaves a few things out. Humanity's nature is innately sinful and we do not have the power to actually be paradigms of virtue ourselves. This is why we seek God's mercy, and salvation, and repent for our sins while attempting to do the best we can.

Marcus Aurelius raised Commodus. He is the perfect example of a guy who tried his hardest and still fucking failed at the one task which no man has any excuse to fail at: Raising his children to be as good or better men than he.

But he could be forgiven for his failures. All that is necessary is that one acknowledges that we are only mortal, and that through the grace of God, our sins may be forgiven. Acknowledging our sinful nature is part of this process. Simply saying "durr well I'm gonna be gud and if da gods don't think I'm good enuff den dey're evil" is fedora nonsense.
