THE THING IS, ONLY ONE OF THE TWO DIED. THE OTHER IS NOW A PARAPLEGIC.

IMAGINE, WAKING UP, A CRIPPLE, AND THE ONE PERSON WHO WENT THROUGH EVERYTHING WITH YOU IS NOW GONE.

So i'm reading The Ebony Tower by John Fowles at the moment and it's a collection of 3 stories, the first one (i'm on the 2nd atm) is about art and name drops a lot of artists, art movements, styles of painting , techniques etc. It can be a little off-putting to have 3 or 4 pages where you have no clue what the author is talking about, so i wanted to ask you /lit/

what do you do when faced with a book like this? get on google/wikipedia to check out every reference point mentioned? Just ignore it and go on? Do you feel like you miss out if you don't fully understand the flow of the conversations the authors are having?

and secondly:
has anyone here read The Ebony Tower by John Fowles? what did you think?

and finally:
are there any books on art history? Like a beginners guide to all the art movements according to decade or something? Like the History of Western Philosophy but for art? I'm only very slightly knowledgeable when it comes to a few of them but still pretty in the dark.
