That all said, it is worth noting that the first short arc in Beserk is pretty much your average horror/action manga. It doesn't start developing the story until it flashes back to Guts' childhood.

You could sort of miss the Black Swordsman Arc or just hit it after the Eclipse, which is when it is set.
