The elites realized Twitter could be used as a tool to spread propaganda and rile up a mob to eliminate rivals. Just the high tech version of libelous pamphlets except Twitter can reach audiences in a wider net.
Notice how the people being cancelled almost always Tweeted something that is considered "sexist, racist, homophobic, transphobic, Islamophobic", etc?
The Twitter is riled up to ruin the lives of people who dare to commit thoughtcrime against the globohomo liberal agenda, this is a way of punishing and discouraging dissent.
It all started with the #MeToo movement. I suspect the actors and directors that got metoo'd were targeted because of some internal Hollywood beef.
It fosters a climate of fear where people are afraid to speak out against the narrative and so they start to self-censor, because you never no when the Twitter might come for you too if you leave a post like that on your account.
