Because the western ideal is based on Faust, the fallen hero, the martyr, the man whose end justified his means, an antagonist that can be seen as a tragic character but also as an utilitarian and intelligent one: someone for middle class to root for instead of naive idealism and full on evilness inherent in other classes.
