The thing you need to finally understand is that all your "vain" aspects you fully need to discard (unless you are not even there yet).
The only literature you should "care" about is Ovid's tale of Echo and Narcissus, Metamorphoses. Book III. 339-510.
Then the only truly essential thing to learn from that is that there is no one worthy of appreciating the narcissus; and all the turned heads, form noble men and beautiful women and even the curiosity of a deity in nymph Echo pail in Narcissus' own interest and desire for him. This is what I meant with forget the vain aspects.
The only question that remains is how not to suffer the same fate as Narcissus. Do not: jump into the pool to trying to clasp yourself only to drown (as one version of the tale has it) or beat your chest in till you dissolve into blood and at most only water the ground for a new flower to sprout. At the contemplative moment over the reflection is it literature at this point that you need? I very much doubt this. To completely stand on your own as a triumphant Narcissus and not simply flee the pursuer like daphne: that is the only germane point.
There are too many faggots out there who do nothing but further muddy the water and add to the confusion created by ugly fucks. This is actually a very perinent issue, but there is not a lot of help provided which does tell something. If all you get is pedos like Mann writing about adonis, literature is probably not relevant.
