The pursuit with Tobin Toadvine and the kid fleeing from the Judge through the barren desert strewn with the bones of dead animals was absolute kino and one of the most haunting and dread-inducing images a book has ever put into my mind

Something about seeing the Judge built up as this borderline supernatural monster directing violence against others with the gang for the entire book and then having the switch flipped with the 'protagonists' being on the receiving end of that was terrifying

Judge Holden & Kurtz from HoD are the two that immediately spring to mind, mostly because they're both written well enough to transcend the role of 'villain' and even 'antagonist' - becoming something outside of genre convention and being used to further the themes of their respective stories at the same time.

I mean, I don't know if they're the best but I fucking love them.
