What is the appeal of Cthulhu? Not Lovecraft in general, but Cthulhu. All too often people make reference or whatever to Cthulhu even without reading Call of Cthulhu. Why is that and why not the other elder gods?

>Greyjoy sigil is a Kraken
>water and mysteries and shit
>"What is dead may never die"

Subtle, GRRM. 10/10. GOAT. Tee-hee Lovecraft was such a great writer and not a shitty Poe wannabe!

Gonna go get my oil changed tomorrow, and gonna purchase a book from the Barnes and Noble next door while I wait. Thinking of trying to read something by Lovecraft (never read any of his works).

Which of his books should I start with? Or is it just a free-for-all where any of them would do?

Pic related, the only knowledge I have of Lovecraft is Cthulu-memes.

I don't understand what R'lyeh is about, people describe it as a sunken city, it is suppose to be deep down at the bottom of some sea right? In At The Mountains of Madness they confirm that, Cthulhu-spawn claimed that piece of land than it sunked down.

But in Call of Cthulhu some sailors just stumble upon it, how is that possible when it is suppose to be underwater? The island sunk like hunderds of millions years ago before humans even existed.

Also, on Call of Cthulhu they accidentally let Cthulhu free, even though he is suppose to be this big thing that "sleeps in the dead city of R'lyeh", what did it just go back to the city after wandering around randomly?

Explain all this to me. I'm probably missing something big here.

/lit/ I have a Lovecraft question asked by a person who maybe writing a story.
What characteristics do Lovecraftian monsters have? If any.
Is The Thing from John Carpenter's film a good example?

Is it me or do lovecrafts stories get significantly more boring whenever its in 3rd person?

every great story he's written that ive read and enjoyed so far has had that first person perspective and usually also tells about their mental health before or after

but the 3rd person stories are all about dreams and have no real hook or anything...

im not stupid here, am i?

Does it absolutely fucking infuriate anyone else when they see people with Cthulhu shirts/dolls/accessories, who constantly spout shit like "Cthulhu Phtagn!" etc. and they haven't actually read ANY Lovecraft?

It drives me crazy. And not seeing-trans-dimensional-beings-in-my-sleep crazy. More like punch-a-kitten-in-the-face crazy.

Also: Lovecraft appreciation thread. Anyone ever read "Sweet Ermengarde"? It's the only humorous story of his I've read, and it's fucking hilarious.

Down the coast they come, bearing their blades and black pennants. Some, in an armored phallanx, take to the high rock and burden their bows. Far beyond, through the dense fog, to the place where the tide breaks with height and violence, the great Cthulhu.

Figured I'd keep it short and sweet.

Hey /lit/, I just got a gift card for Amazon for my birthday and I was hoping to fish some good fiction suggestions on what to buy. I'm a fan of Raymond Chandler, Michael Moorcock, and H.P Lovecraft. I'd prefer a series to a standalone story and something that's a bit of a challenge (although not because the author sucks at writing).

Open to non-fiction as well but either something along the lines of Richard Slotkin's The Fatal Environment (dissection of American mythology), Anthropological theory or even on more niche material like the anti-treaty IRA.

Cross-posting from /tg/. Hope you don't mind.

Morning, /lit/. Help settle an argument?

What is the etymology of Cthulhu's name? I have a friend who swears that it's from the Greek "Cthonic," but he can't provide any proof. He also calls anything to do with the Mythos "Cthonic," and it drives me bats.

I have never seen Cthonic used to describe the Mythos. Is he full of shit, and if so can you provide proof? Google has left me dry. Thank you for your time.

What's your favourite Lovecraft story, /lit/? I completely adore The Outsider for the sense of melancholy I was left with. The Rats In The Walls is another personall favourite.

Hello /lit,

I usually never frequent this board, but I'm in need of advices.

I'd like to start reading some of HP Lovecraft books and I don't really know where to start.

Could you help me out ?

Can anyone suggest any books where the old ones get stomped? I like the idea of ancient evil gods and all, but I'm also a pansy that enjoys a book with a happy ending... usually featuring the main villain getting snuffed.
So I was wondering if theres a novel where the big ancient, unspeakable, madness inducing, squidhead gets pwned... thanks much.

/lit/, I seem to enjoy almost every book I read. Granted, I haven't read a whole lot of them, not when comparing numbers with a /lit/ resident, I'd guess, but still.

Is this considered bad? Does this make me stupid in my inability to differ good from bad? Of course there were books I started reading and thought unbearable, but mostly I can enjoy anything.

I'm unsure whether this is a nice thing or not. I feel somewhat stupid, and I regret my tendency not to truly analyse literature, but I also feel partly blessed that I can be so easily entertained.

Thoughts?

Picture not related in any relevant way.
