Because the Western church long ago stopped worshipping God and turned to the worship of an idol God of Reason. The influence of Neoplatonism and the Greeks may have set the stage, but this didn't corrupt the church all through the middle ages; obviously the Protestant Reformation and the ensuing break with (little-c) catholic tradition made this corruption possible. Kierkegaard saw this influence in the Danish church, and dedicated the last years of his life to fighting it.
