>Is the role of an intelligence analyst synonymous with that of an intelligence officer
There are analysts that are called "officers" as a matter of tradition, otherwise no. Officers are like corporate middle managers in that they provide direction and oversight, while analysts, be they enlistedmen, contractors, or government employees, do the dirty work of reading, writing, and drafting slide decks.
>Is analysis primarily collating and reporting sensitive information
Yes
>Do you get the impression it's mentally stimulating?
There are so many things you can do in my job it's hard to touch generalize like that. Anything from a cushy 9-5 at NSA to jumping out of planes and guiding a ranger assault force to shoot a high value target in the face. As for what I'm doing right now? Not really, but I found that I'm more interested in the latter type of work. Ask me in another year, and another year after that, and you'd get two more answers.
