Why, hello there. I'm a humble man looking for a book. If you can aid me, know that it is for a friend of mine who doesn't have much time on his hands. I try to brainwash him into reading Infinite Jest, but I'm not there yet. I know he really likes Lord of The Rings. It is one of the many reasons he doesn't have time to read IJ (he also works 9/5 shifts).
What would be a short postmodern book suited for introducing a new lad into the world of real, classical /lit/?

I have a well paying job but I find it hard to try because I genuinely do not know if the economy will not either crash or hyperinflate my income out of existence by a few years from now.

I cope by lifting weights but I feel like I have no job security ultimately and only feel dread when I think too hard about the future.
