This is my humble justification on the matter, let me know what you think about this line of reasoning, if it requires clarification or if its flawed in any way;
If a consumer refuses to buy a product, whether because its ecologically damaging or otherwise, the businessman is forced to innovate the product or see his profits shrink. Furthermore, if a competing business were to introduce an "eco-friendly" variant, then there is again incentive to create a model that outperforms the competition. This is all done in the private sector. You're saying the businessman looks to his profit margins for guidance, which I agree with, but you're leaving out the part that if the businessman cares about his business then he MUST care about his consumers, because without the consumer the business fails.
