Bit esoteric (I assume we're still allowed to talk about literature on this board), but anyone else love the wild and meandering style of "pre-Victorian" novels? It seems like to me a lot of books pre-1840's weren't afraid of throwing their characters into wild situations and cared very little about structure and on the whole were more episodic in nature. I suspect Dickens's work as a whole is the main offender (with the exception of The Pickwick Papers which clearly belongs to this earlier age) as novels became less chatty, more organized, and more plot-focused but somehow more predictable, so it seems like something I can't put my finger on was lost in the process.

So that is to say, any recs for early 18th-century books?

To be quite honest with thee I only picked it up because I heard Julien Sorel was a /literally-me/ character before /literally-me/ characters were a thing because a lot of the book revolves around him thinking that he was /literally/ Napoleon and kept pictures of the Emperor under his pillow and shit.

Pretty good book though. Best description would be a French Crime and Punishment

Just finished pic related. Some takeaways:
>milfs
>ladders as a metaphor
>love letters...you can tell this is highly influenced by the epistolary tradition it succeeds
>napoleon as a role model to all non-nobles
>fuck the provinces
>fuck paris
>fuck the Church
>fuck the petit bourgeoisie
>abbé Pirard was ok

Missing anything?

Haven't seen this one here yet, it's a good read and I think a lot of the readers here would identify with the main character.

This makes Romeo and Juliet look like Twilight.

Shitting on Shakespeare general?
