Why do we blindly worship old things? I'm talking specifically about literature here.

For example, Don Quixote is the first 'modern novel' ever written, and is dogmatically hailed as the "best" or the "greatest" (hmm). Now, it's certainly had a lot of influence. It's certainly very old. But I don't think what makes a novel great is its age (because then why don't we just start judging books solely on their age?).

It just strikes me as statistically unlikely that the first novel ever written is the best. We've had millions of novels since then, what's the likelihood that the first one is the best, by any objective standard other than age? I'd say very low. We improve on things as time goes by.
