There’s a bit of a difference between classic westerns and the Spaghetti Westerns Leone made, but if you want something that fits the aesthetic your best starting place is honestly probably the novelization of the films. Edge the Loner also has a Spaghetti Western feel, but it’s more one of the less polished, cheaper ones.

Decent list I saved some time ago.

It strangely lacks the book that I is probably most frequently recommended Western on this board: Warlock by Oakley Hall, which is indeed very good.

I also recommend Elmore Leonard's Valdez is Coming - excellent.

And two by Louis L'Amour that are particularly enjoyable:

Here's a chat by the way. I read Edge the Loner but in all honesty didn't care for it.

I agree with the first anon that Blood Meridian is the best western. The Border Trilogy is also great but if you’re looking for something more escapist I just read Ede the Loner and it was the only book I’ve read so far that captures the feel of a Spaghetti Western.

I'm partial to Valdez is Coming, myself.

As for /lit/ fave Warlock, I thought it had some very good things, and some things - certain scenes, certain aspects of some of the characters - that didn't work for me, although the good substantially outweighs the bad and it's quite evocative and well worth reading.
