ITT: We admit we are uncultured swine who are too immature to read good literature.

Pic related. I tried reading this and found myself so bored I literally had no idea who was who and what the hell was going on. It seemed to be a bunch of rich people talking about themselves and driving around New York having fabulous parties.

ITT: We analyze famous quotes from books.

"it is what preyed on Gatsby, what foul dust floated in the wake of his dreams that temporarily closed out my interest in the abortive sorrows and short-winded elations of men."

Hey /lit/
What did you all think of the ending of this book?
I, personally, was extremely pissed that Gatsby was murdered, and felt that Tom should have died.

I just finished reading The Great Gatsby. Great book, and awfully depressing. After reading the last line, I felt very nostalgic. I thought I wasn't going to like Gatsby when I first was reading the book, but I felt sad when he suffered the fate he did.

Hey /lit/
Can you help me answer some questions on the first two chapters of this book?

1. Notice how many times Fitzgerald uses the words 'hope', or dream. Why does he do this?

2. Nick started the novel with relaying his father's advice "Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone, just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had." List Nick's advantages. Does he reserve judgement in the novel?

3. Describe Nick. What facts do you know about him, and what is inferred? What kind of narrator do you think he will be?

4. What image does the author use to describe Jordan Baker? What does it mean?

5. How does Nick react to Jordan?

6. What does Tom's behavior describe about his character?

7. Describe the Valley of Ashes. What does it mean and represent?

8. Describe Mr. Wilson and Myrtle.

9. What more have you learned about Nick in the second chapter? Is he similar or different than his peers?

10. Describe the violent act Tom committed against Myrtle. What does this reveal about him?

All the above and the extra credit answer: I'm a virgin.

"He smiled understandingly--much more than understandingly. It was one of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reassurance in it, that you may come across four of five times in life. It faced--or seemed to face--the whole external world for an instant,a nd then concentrated on you with an irresistible prejudice in your favor. It understood you just so far as you wanted to be understood, believed in you as you would like to believe in yourself and assured you that it had precisely the impression of you that, at your best, you hoped to convey."

So hey there. I've got a report of this book due tomorrow. Problem is I haven't read it. So if anyone feels like helping I'd love it.

Anyway, I'm writing it on Gatsby. I know a bit about him, but not enough to write a full essay. I'd just like some information on him, anything would do.

Thanks.
