Hegemony and Socialist strategy by Lacleau + Mouffe (1985). Classic. The daddy of post-marxism. moves beyond Marx's often simplistic models of power and economics

Sublime object (1989) - Zizek. moves beyond traditional Marxism by critically engaging with theories of Lacan, to explore the intersections between ideology, subjectivity, and desire. Expands on how ideology shapes our perception of reality from what MArx wrote.

Empire (2000) - Hardt Negri - responds to the changing nature of power due to globalization (diminishment of the nation-state) and promotes the idea of "the multitude" instead of the marxist proletariat.

The Limits of Capital (1982) - David Garvey - focuses on a reappraisal of MArx's critique of capitalism, bringing it more up to date and streamlining it a touch. very good.

These are 20-40 years old but I still find them relevant and i'm glad I read them despite not being a marxist.

Considering left wing politics died 3+ decades a go, I'd assume there are many ex-leftists floating about. It was really common for ex-communists to become hyper-individualist libertarians in the 90's. Very weird transition from one extreme to the other but I suspect being anti establishment and a contrarian was more important to them than ethics, ideology or convictions.

>Is Cultural Marxism real?
kind of in that you had marxists who took on board Freud and the unconscious as a structure to be considered along with and secondary to the economy in determining social relations (e.g. How do class relations "reify" themselves into cultural practices). its been irrelevant for decades.

What "culture wars" pundits and good ole' Ted refers to as "cultural marxism" is a bit more muddled. It largely stems from the explosion of AM talk radio conspiracy theorists in the 90's after Reagan deregulated the Federal Communications Commission (Paul Weyrich, Pat Buchanan and William Lind were all involved).
After the fall of the berlin wall mainstream leftwing parties in Europe and America resolutely moved towards the centre ground and alienated their left-wing members. It became a bit silly referring to characters like Clinton or Blair as "communists", "socialists" or "marxists". Not one to waste 4 decades of propaganda tropes, right wing pundits decided to re-apply them to the boom in idendity politics and the alphabet people in western societies.......which is much more based on liberalism than marxism (individualism, idealism, universalism, anti-essentialism are an anathema to marxism but prominent ideas in SJW stuff).
The weird bit was when the troons etc started to self-identify as marxists. weird feedback loop!!

The entirety of rightwing online pundits are influenced by their precursors on 90's AM radio both in style and money so it stands to reason that they would sing from the songbook. But if you actually want to understand the surge in identity based politics marx, the frankfurt school, gramsci, marcuse etc etc wont help you much. They haven't had the impact on contemporary "progressive" politics that most in the right imagine.
