Tao haters possess even less perspective than their implied erudition. You'll find breezy dismissals or curt profanity assailing the work of a young man for not solving all the problems of literature, culture, modernity, whatever faluting bugaboo Tao insufficiently addressed as he's barely out of puberty born into our flux. And maybe they're correct, but they embarrass themselves by a glaring lack of perspective: young people don't know shit. That's how it has always been. Young writers cannot escape this although they can mask it by doing some exotic or exceptional like military service or the peace corps or some well-financed adventure. But at the end of that, they haven't transcended being young because that is impossible. Even Infinite Jest rings strongly as the work of a young man, albeit a gifted one.
Tao and Megan's first and foremost responsibility, besides keeping their writing disciplines going, is to stay alive, as Houellebecq prescribes. Reading Tao or Megan requires you accept young, naive and very incomplete people are composing. If you're upset by them, worry not, someone will come along and lick you from the baleen
