I'm reading his essay on Lynch right now, and his criticism of Dune makes me want to punch him in the face.

I'll tell you what I tell every other person who brings this up (buying more than you can finish, that is).

Buy as many books as you want. Read as few as you want. It doesn't matter. Read what you feel like reading, and only as much of it as you feel like reading. If you want to put a book down halfway through, then do so. And seriously, fuck "to-read lists". Don't commit yourself to reading anything you don't truly want to read.
