every time you despair, thinking you'll never get published, remember that THIS is now available in print so you can't be too far behind

yurope has a running gag of gay characters trying to turn the protagonist gay for his own good

what does /lit/ think of self published eBooks?
As the avenues for young writers to get started in print dry up
[smaller magazines and news papers closing shop while larger magazines and news papers only want established talent.]
is it ok to cut out the middle man and go off on your own? especially when the middle man is so set on pushing an agenda?
Yurope, for example, is rumored to have been accepted for publication by simon & schuster at one point, then cancelled when it was discovered that the black avatar used by the author was a joke and that he was actually heterosexual white male.

I ask because I was always taught that self publishing was masturbatorial and a sure sign that novel was worth publishing legitimately.
But now I feel like the just aren't enough avenues to make a name for yourself the old fashioned way and self publishing with services like amazon is the only option left.
In the future, I plan to release my backlog of novels on amazon, and I'm wondering, does /lit/ think I'm just wasting my time?
