If you're reading the di Giovanni translations it helps that those are really, really excellent translations. Remember, Borges himself worked with di Giovanni on those. So they have the words of the original author in them, even translated into English, which Borges spoke fluently.

I have heard it said, though, that while the di Giovanni translations are fantastic, they're not necessarily *authentic*, because they're less translations and more rewritings, and rewritings by Borges more than 30 years after he'd written the originals. It's essentially the old man rewriting the younger man. So it's still Borges' writing, but it may not truly reflect what Borges felt in the 1930s when he was first writing in Spanish.

I don't know. I don't speak Spanish so I can't judge.

Does anybody have the di Giovanni translation of "The Garden of Forking Paths"?

Anybody ever read this particular Borges story? It's one of his later works; I think it's only found in The Book Of Sand. It's an interesting sci-fi story. I honestly found myself somewhat unsettled reading it, how the future man's world is similar to our own in some uncomfortable ways.

What would Borges think of the new leader of his country?
