I hear their teachings are similar. Is that a true conclusion people reach from studying their teachings as closely as possible, or is that just a thing people who are vaguely spiritual but not religious say to justify their lack of commitment to any specific religion?

They were both revisionist figures for their religious traditions. They also both had very humanist teachings, which was very new to religions which had previously been almost wholly focused on the "holy other."
