I'm looking for classics, something similar to Nabokov or Dostoevsky. Doesn't necessarily have to be a Russian, but something with profound and captivating prose preferred

>“The degree of civilization in a society,” said Dostoyevsky, “can be judged by entering its prisons.”
What does this mean, exactly?

My russian friend said that dostoevsky is better in English than in Russian

Is it even worth it to learn russian if this is true?

>God preserve you, my dear boy, from ever asking forgiveness for a fault from a woman you love. From one you love especially, however greatly you may have been at fault. For a woman - devil only knows what to make of a woman: I know something about them, anyway. But try acknowledging you are in fault to a woman. Say, 'I am sorry, forgive me,' and a shower of reproaches will follow! Nothing will make her forgive you simply, directly, she'll humble you to the dust, bring forward things that have never happened, recall everything, forget nothing, add something of her own, and only then forgive you. And even the best, the best of them do it. She'll scrape up all the scrapings and load them on your head. They are ready to flay you alive, I tell you, every one of them, all these angels without whom we cannot live! I tell you plainly and openly, dear boy, every decent man ought to be under some woman's thumb. That's my conviction - not conviction, but feeling. A man ought to be magnanimous, and it's no disgrace to a man! No disgrace to a hero, not even a Caesar! But don't ever beg her pardon all the same for anything. Remember that rule given you by your brother Mitya, who's come to ruin through women. (Brothers Karamazov)

Was this a cringe and blue pilled or based and redpilled belief of Dmitri's?

There is nothing in life more powerful than this piece of fiction. It is still the final and the greatest expression of human thought, the most bitter irony that a human is capable of expressing; and if the world came to an end and people were asked somewhere there: ‘Well, did you understand anything about your life on earth and draw any conclusion from it?’ a person could silently hand over Don Quixote. ‘Here is my conclusion about life. Can you condemn me for it?’

I really enjoyed Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment and Underground Man, what other books should I pickup next? I am looking for works that explore the themes of pain, extreme alienation, suffering and guilt. I would very much prefer if it was written in the same era as the aforementioned books and written by a Russian author.

Thanks

Is there really no morality without God? What natural reason is there for someone to do something selfless if there is no prospect of reward or punishment?

Hey /lit/ I was at goodwill and was able to acquire three books for a really cheap price, two of the books where both from the writer Dostoevsky.

The books are "Crime and punishment" and "The house of the dead"

Now I'm going to already assume you all have opinions, and I want them regardless of it's bad or good views but I also want to know as a person who has never read any of his works which one should I start with?

What makes great writers so abnormal?

Why do rarely hear about a successful writer who is generally a calm, compassionate, humble, normal person?

I would like to start reading Dostoevsky but I constantly see arguments over the proper translation The Brothers Karamazov. What do you suggest /lit/? It seems like a war between Pevear and whoever Penguin uses.

But you did not want to deprive man of freedom and rejected the offer, for what kind of freedom is it, you reasoned, if obedience is purchased with loaves? You retorted that man lives not by bread alone, but are you aware that in the name of that same earthly bread the Earth Spirit will rise up against you and fight with you and vanquish you, and everyone will follow it, crying: 'Who is like unto this beast, he has given us fire from heaven!' Are you aware that centuries will pass, and mankind will proclaim with the lips of its wisdom and science that there is no crime and consequently no sin either, but only the hungry. 'Feed them, and then ask virtue of them!' —that is what will be inscribed upon the banner they will raise against you and before which your temple will come crashing down.

Was the grand inquisitor right? All of our social processes came in tandem with economic developments. Is there such a thing as virtue?

Did Dostoevsky BFTO Christianity and himself?
