Jesus fuck I hate primitivists

There is like a century max before industrial society stabilizes, produces enough wealth to bring everyone from boston to botswana out of undesirable life, and advances technological progress to conceivable heights.

In a hundred years, everything between the agricultural revolution and then will be referred to as the "dark ages", and you want to toss away all the slow building gains of civilization right on the cusp of its first fruit worth working towards.

>incapable of putting pen to paper because anything you write will soil how perfect it is in your head

I never got this line of thought. My understanding is pretension is when someone overshoots their boundaries. They try to sound deep without depth, try to sound educating without saying anything worthwhile. These people just use it like one should be ashamed of trying to deviate from a common denominator of basic thought.

I read literature because there are certain authors who, after being exposed to hours of their thought, imbue a kind of oneness with the human condition. This cannot be achieved without trying to do it, most of the time. If you try and fail, it's pretentious. If you try and succeed, you get something like Ulysses. Why do they bash Joyce for trying to go so far when, by all accounts, he hit the mark? It doesn't seem like they doubt he hit it, but they criticize the fact that he tried in the first place.
