Just over a month ago I resubscribed to HBO to watch S2 of Treme. Shortly thereafter curiosity lead me to Game of Thrones. Now I find myself enjoying GoT just as much as Treme. I picked up a copy of the A Game of Thrones novel and am enjoying it greatly.

The question I face is this: Do I purposely slow my reading as to not get ahead of the TV series? Or do I move forward and read the novels before subsequent episodes/seasons air?

Should I experience the plot (with all its wonderful twists and turns) for the first time via the TV show or the novels? Discuss.

This question has been posted on both /tv/ and /lit/. Thank you for the advice.

I've been trying to get into Game of Thrones, at the behest of one of my friends, and I just can't.

I mean, there are things I like. Intrigue as a plot theme, for one, I very much enjoy, and the relationships between characters are pretty authentic, but I'm still three chapters in and having a hard time getting further.

The villains mustache-twirl like crazy, and are painfully obvious and only really two-dimensional as far as I can see. Martin also throws an intense amount of diverse characters into the fray right off the bat, and juggling them can be difficult, especially when he kills certain ones off in two short chapters and we're left with the awkward question of why we care while others mourn.

That, and the propensity he has for making up words for things without properly explaining them turns me off to his book. It's great that you can make your fantasy setting feel authentic, but I'd really very much like to be clued in, as a reader, thanks.

Anyway, is it worth keeping on keeping on? I'd really like to not drop it, but the book is all kinds of rubbing me the wrong way.

I was wandering the bookstore and saw A Game of Thrones. I remember /lit/ recommending it so I began reading it. It began with some cliched adventurers-in-the-woods nonsense that reminded me of my bad D&D experience.

Is this book actually good? What's it about?

Just finished reading the series so far.

Having a couple of friends read this as well I asked them how they felt about the characters. They all had different opinions but the general consensus is people like Jaime and people hate Catelyn and feel indifferent towards everyone else.

I, on the other hand, still can't get over what happens to the Stark children. They essentially get fucked over at every point with the exception of Robb who was doing OK until he got murdered.

Anyway what are your theories as how this will all end up?

Currently reading this. What does /lit/ think about fantasy novels? I LOVE pretty much anything Tolkien, and think harry potter is for children. Sword of Truth series is also really great imo.

Anyone read George RR Martin's A Song of Fire and Ice series?

I finished a Game of Thrones recently and absolutely loved it. Now I'm on A Clash of Kings. You can tell he really planned out the whole series.
For example, I was wondering if Bran knowing about Cersei and Jaime was ever going to come into play, and in A Clash of Kings it is.

So I'm about 150 pages into this...

Just curious: is it normal to hate 80% of all the characters in the book this far through it? They're all so damn villainous, or if not that, just plain stupid. There are only four characters that are likable (to me)...

Does it get better? Please, tell me one of these assholes from the south dies?

Why is there no Dany, Bran or Tyrion chapters in AFfC?

I'm halfway through and nothing. Where is my favorite dwarf/khalessi/cripple? :(

I've heard that AFfC was too long, so George shortened it, did he do so by taking out half the characters or something? No Davos or anything either I've noticed.
