A lot of people like power fantasies, I guess, which is why this sort of a habit prevails. Give them someone really competent and flawless, but with little to no personality or backstory, to allow them to insert themselves into the character and vicariously live through him or her.

But others, like myself and probably you, enjoy underdogs. We like to see the heroes struggle and fight and go through a lot of trouble for victories, and even then victory is never certain - and so I tried to make my protagonist one. Maybe you'd like that instead.

I wish he'd just chucked the whole franchise to public domain. It's where it belongs now. It's practically a fairy tale, a piece of popular consciouness that SHOULD be free.

Fuck modern copyright laws.

I'll admit to feeling the same. Ever since publishing my first novel, I've come to wish that I had been around to write this stuff thirty, even fifty years ago. Back when there was more room to spread around, and when I might even have been in the position to influence the present day and leave a legacy.

Now, I know not if I will ever leave a legacy of any type at all. If anyone remembers my work at all, if it isn't drowned under the sea of misery and failed hopes, then I will be truly and pleasantly surprised.

That being the case, I'm not going to let it stop me from writing. I've written all my life, and now that I feel I'm ready for it, I feel like there's no reason not to put it out there and try my luck. Maybe, even if it never finds remotely widespread recognition, someone will find some joy in it.

I can write pretty fast when I want to, it's just that hanging out on 4chan - getting involved in all this trolling, arguing, raging, and drama bullshit - melts my brain and makes it next to impossible to focus on getting shit done.

I really should leave, but I can't.

>What if you have to choose preventing 5 persons from being killeg but you have to kill 1 person?
>How about choosing between killing 1 person and nuking an entire megacity?
>What if you had to sacrifice one guy or else the entire population of the earth including yourself and that one guy will be killed? Would you kill that one guy instead?
Ask for volunteers? If no one volunteers, then I guess they'll all have to die and it's what they wanted.

Why the fuck do the people making up these bullshit arbitrary moral dilemmas never think about you just, you know, ASKING?

I've read Children of Hurin and Beren & Luthien both, and planning to give Fall of Gondolin its fair shake as soon as I get my hand on it. I've liked them fine so far - better than many other books I've read - but they can't hold a candle to Tolkien and honestly it feels a little bit wrong to see them expanded like this.

Any joy and excitement I can get out of these books, is drowned under the sadness of what they could've been like if Tolkien himself had lived long enough to write them entirely himself.

>someone posts a stupid pun with an absurd premise
>a score of pseuds immediately swarm over to screech on about it and try to make themselves look clever to other anonymous assholes on the internet
>nobody learns shit or comes out on top

Why do you even bother.

>I got a call from the city library asking me if I had anymore books to donate
>I donated a copy of every Robert A. Heinlein book and 2 copies of every Nero Wolfe & Agatha Christie novel about four years ago to my city library
>They nominated me for citizen of the year when I donated those books
>They haven't left me alone since then
>mfw I've changed phone numbers twice since then
