That whole generation of writers were mentally damaged by the war and only the ones who were intelligent were able to communicate the deep lasting misery of the wartime experience as well as the general aftereffects it had on the culture, things like being displaced from tradition, encouraging and normalizing heavy drinking and wartime style carousing, etc, etc.

This was also one of the earliest generations to grow up under the shadow of naturalism, which depicted the lower economic strata, which were rightly depicted as less happy. This meant it was fashionable to write unhappy or miserable stories in order to seem "modern."

Tbqh this is true. The person in my social circle who is most vocal about rape culture is literally a sex worker. I can't help but raise my eyebrows and extrapolate.

I often feel the conversation about misogyny is dominated by a vocal minority of women either informed by or in abnormal circumstances, people who have abnormal sensativities, rather than women who have normal, healthy cross-gender interactions and normal tolerances for things like flirting, sexual misadventure, etc.

I also think we increasingly becoming narcissistic in out political outlooks because of our general inability to have any real effect on the world, and this leads to a kind of anchorite hairsplitting over personal experiences and emotions that you wouldn't get in a world where people's daily lives expressed and cultivated them more. Part of this comes from being overeducated and underemployed.
