I finished this right now and it was ok.

The great strength of it was its "structure" (not sure of the proper term). Franzen shifts between different plot threads in a really good way.

I can completely understand why people can see this as meh, insufferable, or good. It really is white bread tier and I say this not as some sjw. I don't believe that this is the great book of the early 21st century.

The beginning of the book, when it was describing Chip, was maybe the best part but the momentum stopped. The Denise part later on was also good. Gary was underdeveloped but then he was more of a success.

I imagined Alfred as looking like hide the pain Harold.
