In just three words Melville establishes an impression of the main character and the narrator of the story. With a short, minimal self-introduction we can tell that Ishmael is a private person, and likely modest as well. Furthermore, we can make him out to be a stern personality as he uses a command. He could have said "My name is Ishmael", or "They call me Ishmael" the first be generic and the latter passive. But instead he gives us a plain order, "Call me Ishmael". The nuance of this simple imperative sentence allowed me to create an image of Ishmael in my head.

It was honestly the brilliance of that first line that convinced me to read this Great American Epic.
