>Robert Alterin his review of the book inThe New Republicwrote: "Some may seize on it as a postmodern masterpiece, but it is a bloated monster of a book. [...] The bloat is a consequence of sheer adipose verbosity and an unremitting condition of moral and intellectual flatulence. [...] The abjection of (Gass') hero seems less lived than written. It is an act of ventriloquism: behind the repulsive, potentially fascist narrator stands his critic, the novelist, presumably committed to humane, democratic values. But those values are nowhere intimated in the book, and what emerges is a kind of inadvertent complicity between author and protagonist. The supposedly critical novel becomes an enactment of bad faith."[5]

What are your thoughts on the most beautiful, cost complex, most disturbing novel to be published in Michael Silverblatt's lifetime?

It is definitely a contender for most beautiful and most disturbing, but I didn't find it complex at all. Did I miss something?

Has anyone here read this book? I started it two days ago and am thoroughly enjoying it but wondering how important it is that I understand some of the more difficult and unconventional bits. For the most part I feel like I'm getting the gist of it. Should I just sit back and enjoy the ride or really try to pick apart every layer of the narrator's ranting and raving?

Also general thoughts and opinions on the Tunnel by William H Gass thread I guess

117 pages into The Tunnel by William Gass and I'm enjoying it, my only questions are "does he continue to mull over the same stuff throughout the entire book?" & "does it pick up or become a different sorta book at a specific point?".
