No, but the usage of core in those books is a bit ambigious and most of the time seems like an awkward copout. I've seen many female writers use this.
As for your second part, I know how it feels to be in an intimate and emotional relationship, but maybe I just tend to describe those feelings and emotions more... rational and descriptive. Might be a me-problem.

Again, I've seen it often used in a way that seems more emotional. And even when used to describe a physical part, it can be the outer parts, or the inner parts, but nothing concrete.
