>those evil indians lived like savages, hunting, gathering and relaxing all day as a happy community instead of farming and exhausting natural resources
>thankfully, the white man brought menial jobs, currency, black people, brothels, jewish merchants and decadency to the land

this is proto-post-ironic right?

Why do people say this is Steinbeck's worst work?

>absolute and utter kino for the first half
>very decent third quarter
>last quarter is rushed and abrupt
has anyone who has written any sort of story notice themselves burn out and just want to finish for the sake of fnishing? Is that why so many works follow this Start Great End Shit formula?

getting back into reading since I have nothing else to do and just finished this. It was a nice story but it was kind of underwhelming, there weren't really many truly emotional moments for me. Plus the narrator of half of the book doesn't even have his own life fleshed out. Like what relation did Samuel's grandson even have to the Trask family so that he is able to recount their entire history? It just seemed like a weird choice of how to tell a significant part of the story

Anyone know a book similar to East of Eden? I have started Grapes of Wrath but I don't think this is quite the same thing, any of Steinbeck's other novels closer?

To make clear what I liked, the multigenerational thing, the time period/setting, the mixture of lower class and slightly more prosperous type people, characters/psychology, and the religious themes.
