Is this book really that good? I’m 5 chapters in and it doesn’t seem all that special

>dude, what if I had two characters speak to each other in double negatives.... again!
>war is.... le paradoxical!
Most reddit book I've ever read. Heller is a hack.

What did you think of it?

It's moderately enjoyable but not nearly as funny or clever as I believe it wishes to be.

Just read Catch-22 for the second time in my life and it's probably one of my favorites. Any thoughts on the book, anons? A few of my own thoughts:

1. The scene with Aarfy and the maid near the end is pretty brutal
2. the last quarter of the book is the best and the fact that so many characters bite it one after the other was very tragic
3. I also have a feeling Heller experienced a lot of these stories verbatim and that he sort of copes with them through the lens of satire. As cartoonish as the book feels, I can 100% picture humans acting this way, especially in a bureaucratic system

Is this overrated boomer trash? Its taking a lot of willpower to keep reading. The humor is amusing at best

I really liked this book, the absurd humour is clever and funny.
More absurd comedy/absurd satire books like Catch-22?

>finally decide to read this
>from all the quotes people keep throwing it sounds like some sort of story about the absurdity of war, I like dystopian fiction and WW2 so why not
>start reading it
>main character is an asshole
>wait no his ramblings are insane
>wait all the characters are insane
>there's no fucking rhyme or reason to any of their actions
>even the style is incoherent
>I'm just getting more and more confused
Does stuff actually go on or is it like this the whole way through?

The effect is impressive, but I don't know if I can stomach 900 more pages of nonsense. However accurate to the absurdity of military life it is.

Please give me some recommendations for literature that you actually enjoyed reading and that you have read again and again.

I have accumulated surprisingly few over the years.

I’m like 120 pages into this book and I really can’t stand it. I have no fucking clue what’s going on, it feels like I’m reading a novel-length shitpost. There’s like a million different characters all on a million different tangents speaking and doing completely nonsensical bullshit. Does the book pick up at some point or is this sort of *it*? Not sure how much more patience I have for this.
