Because books slow people down, both their thinking and behavior. The culture in Fahrenheit 451 is based on fast, shallow thinking. Fast shows. Fast cars. Fast wars. So anything that slows the culture down is a social more and has to be destroyed. Human nature and history is one of endless violence, war and violation of your fellow man. Look into history through a split-second peep, a brief look into a jokeish Youtube channel describing historical events humorously, a brief look into an old piece of folk lore, ruminations and little stories told between elders, and the mention looms over all, war is always present, economic crisis, famines, natural disasters, infestations, conflict. It is the nature of the world because this is life itself. All the things that man does, and all the things nature does converging, constituting what the world is. A million different desires for resources and for ideological outcomes, clashing.

Chaos, if you will, is nature just being itself. To acknowledge it is like acknowledging the overly salty taste of the ocean's water. It is obvious, it has been known, it has always and will always be the way it is, and ultimately, play your cards in the most mediocre fashion you can, and you can mostly avoid it.

If we are living in the safest, most prosperous and most coddled time in history, where people need to make up bullshit reasons to rationalize their endless neuroses and paranoias and little instinctive self-preservation responses against the dangers of the environment that have become useless during these days of sheltered urban living, it's because over the course of 100,000 years, every man, woman and child decided to rise above chaos by powering through it.
